Unlicensed Child Care Providers

 
Unlicensed Child Care Providers can provide care in their own home or the child's home if they are related by blood, marriage or adoption as a :

  • Grandparent/Great-grandparent
  • Aunt/Great aunt
  • Uncle/Great uncle
  • Sibling

Unlicensed Child Care Providers who are not related to the child care only provide care in the child's home.

As of 6/1/13, there will be a $10 non-refundable fee to enroll in the Great Start to Quality Orientation. Pre-registration is required and walk-ins are not permitted. After registering on www.greatstartconnect.org, you will receive an email with a link to make payment by debit or credit card. You can mail check or money order to:

Great Start to Quality Orientation

 

Relative Caregivers and Day Care Aides are now required to take the Great Start to Quality Orientation to continue receiving pay from the State of Michigan to care for children. YOU MUST REGISTER TO ATTEND THIS TRAINING - SPACES ARE LIMITED.  The class is offered on several different dates, times, and locations. Find which class best meets your schedule and register online by going to www.greatstartconnect.org and click on "Training" to find a class date and location. Or, call our office at 616.447.5678. 

The Great Start to Quality Orientation will cover the basic training requirement for Aide and Relative Providers who receive DHS reimbursement for child care services only. The six-hour Great Start to Quality Orientation is a free interactive training covering the following topics: American Heart Association first aid and CPR certification course, nutrition, health and safety, Shaken Baby Syndrome and Safe Sleep Practices. All providers who attend will receive a binder with training materials and information about additional resources.

Attendees must be an Aide or Relative Provider who receives DHS reimbursement. 

Participants need to bring a sack lunch and their provider ID number.

 

Tier 2 Training Opportunity

 

All unlicensed child care providers now have the opportunity to earn a higher reimbursement rate for child care provided by completing 10 additional hours of approved training per year.

Only the approved training topics on the list below will be considered in determining eligibility for Tier 2 reimbursement:

  • Child Development - Basic Ages/Stages and What You Do
  • Behavior Management and Discipline
  • Activities to Help Children Learn
  • Interactions and Relationships
  • Health, Safety and Nutrition
  • Caring for Children with Special Needs
  • Accessing Community Resources
  • Communication Skills
  • Business Basics

Tier 2 Rates & Payment

 

 
DEPARTMENT HOURLY RATES
Effective October 9, 2011

Unlicensed Child Care Providers
TIER 1
Children Age 0-2 1/2 Years    $1.30
Children Age 2 1/2 Years +    $1.35

TIER 2
Children Age 0-2 1/2 Years    $2.20
Children Age 2 1/2 Years +    $1.85

Providers will be eligible for the Tier 2 rate for one year after they have completed the 10 hours of approved training.

To continue receiving the Tier 2 rate, an additional 10 hours of training must be completed within that one year period; otherwise the provider's rate will revert back to the Tier 1 rate.

*Please Note: Tier 2 payment rates cannot be authorized prior to the completion of the Great Start to Quality Orientation.
